“Malagus Tubig” was reported by the subanon tribe as the original name of the town, from the swift river current that kept changing its course towards the mouth of the dumanquillas bay.
In the 15th century, the invaders from other lands found natural refuge in this beautiful land; and changed malagus tubig to margosatubig in pronunciation and writing form.
They built a huge stone fort on top of a hill that served as their bastion against raids of moro pirates along the dumanquillas bay.
In 1963, the fort at Cotta Heights was demolished and is now the site of Pax High School. The colonizers’ reign and governance left the pidgin-spanish chavacano dialect as heritage, similar to that of cavite in luzon.
As a pioneer of the province, the town remained isolated and reachable only by sea craft until 1976, when an asphalt road was finally opened connecting to Pagadian.
Prominent families have lived and pioneered the place, evidenced by the Pinga clans of the katagalugan who remains as the pride of the whole zamboanga.
